<br />
So on Sunday, August 21 (day 2 of the crawl) I printed out a list of the Denver shops (9 of them), found a willing partner in crime and hit the road.<br />
<br />
First up was <a href="http://colorfulyarns.blogspot.com/">Colorful Yarns</a> (their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/colorfulyarns/">Facebook site</a> is more up to date than their blog). They just finished remodeling earlier this year and the new shop looks great! Lots of room and lots of yarn! I ended up with two balls of <a href="http://www.dmc-usa.com/Products/DMC-Top-This-Yarn/DMC-Top-This.aspx">DMC's Top This</a>! in the snowflake and owl.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBAJ8gASjkhG_pzhTuRZlotgQoeh-9xd-3tBsRQ0aDMtx7rfTMFsE7BZZSDh-ag0Kf2EqlEAPTGJDTLmmUhqMAP4CsVQS_hwgmmqN-MshvWU2qyBjlqI6wg-4qh3fUK0fdyiYzS1xZjMTl/s1600/20160821_182938.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBAJ8gASjkhG_pzhTuRZlotgQoeh-9xd-3tBsRQ0aDMtx7rfTMFsE7BZZSDh-ag0Kf2EqlEAPTGJDTLmmUhqMAP4CsVQS_hwgmmqN-MshvWU2qyBjlqI6wg-4qh3fUK0fdyiYzS1xZjMTl/s320/20160821_182938.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I also got a "<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sweet-little-nothing-4">Sweet Little Nothing</a>" shawl kit (yarn + beads + pattern) <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIBJhKEVYfdfaKdiXjZPJjxtL_kSOQbtzFl209fnIkcP-NkWOYiH4dQNrDFVPCareizSROczb0hzg7mnSa6AjIapG6qVCOoLtcSxGdptp2sJmoJWDzmuf7Ei4Y2QMrfzlSxj2dDqupDFT-/s1600/20160821_182934.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIBJhKEVYfdfaKdiXjZPJjxtL_kSOQbtzFl209fnIkcP-NkWOYiH4dQNrDFVPCareizSROczb0hzg7mnSa6AjIapG6qVCOoLtcSxGdptp2sJmoJWDzmuf7Ei4Y2QMrfzlSxj2dDqupDFT-/s320/20160821_182934.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And they were having a trunk show of <a href="http://threeirishgirls.com/">Three Irish Girls</a> yarn so some of that might have fallen into my bag.<br />
(CW: Springvale DK, 270 yards)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ANVargejhpevyBWWbGwexlVS63hyrOshyraRjAIBtvCBYJgQxLF4OMCLSd6M6JMJyNQK7dZX2rzWlUrx5jekpnt63sVmOUDwpL7z4b6HW5eHgbazunpbFvIAzqbhmBbyZ5y2yNLfDR10/s1600/20160821_182920.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ANVargejhpevyBWWbGwexlVS63hyrOshyraRjAIBtvCBYJgQxLF4OMCLSd6M6JMJyNQK7dZX2rzWlUrx5jekpnt63sVmOUDwpL7z4b6HW5eHgbazunpbFvIAzqbhmBbyZ5y2yNLfDR10/s320/20160821_182920.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And, of course, I picked up the yarn crawl bag. It was a much sturdier bag this year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMn2CwGLWVFUu6nSP8bSdlDJ0QEgvHfgyChD59_mhdR1hCNz0jy1Krf59Fp0rsoWTGquu2iAQkaAIi_btSg0ew9xa-xfTgttQEiJPFZV-AHbPunIeWV4wMgn5LEOfOV48IfeO5hFERxenq/s1600/20160905_105722.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMn2CwGLWVFUu6nSP8bSdlDJ0QEgvHfgyChD59_mhdR1hCNz0jy1Krf59Fp0rsoWTGquu2iAQkaAIi_btSg0ew9xa-xfTgttQEiJPFZV-AHbPunIeWV4wMgn5LEOfOV48IfeO5hFERxenq/s320/20160905_105722.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up, <a href="http://www.blazingstarranch.com/">Blazing Star Ranch</a>. This is one of those places I probably would never have gone if it weren't for the yarn crawl. It's tucked away inside a vacuum shop but don't let that fool you. She has lots of lovely handspun yarns, fiber, and spinning wheels as well as commercial yarns. I grabbed a blue and purple skein of the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/hikoo-by-skacel-abracadabra">Abracadabra color changing yarn by HiKoo by Skacel</a>. I had picked up the pink version at last year's yarn crawl and love the effect so I wanted to get the other two colors before this was all gone (you never know when they might discontinue it!). I think I will make the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/trick-or-treat-7">Trick or Treat Shawl</a> out of it.<br />
<br />
Back into the car to head to <a href="https://www.woodenspools.com/">Wooden Spools</a>. They had a really cute Colorado pillow kit which I decided would make a great Xmas gift so into the bag it went.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAiWw2ImXouE4VfkqjEisXmoSgafViubSyI6SwLcBiVLbhTab_Tdv5rf8lTxb1MlIQUdWe5IXmUNQIJAq00Ks2f48iFY1p6DNL2NmOA4QIZe2s1KAe9ThvSR_ZN_z2VzXHKnEXGVPUGAR/s1600/20160905_105750.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAiWw2ImXouE4VfkqjEisXmoSgafViubSyI6SwLcBiVLbhTab_Tdv5rf8lTxb1MlIQUdWe5IXmUNQIJAq00Ks2f48iFY1p6DNL2NmOA4QIZe2s1KAe9ThvSR_ZN_z2VzXHKnEXGVPUGAR/s320/20160905_105750.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I also picked up a couple balls of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/queensland-collection-sunshine-coast">Sunshine Coast By Queensland collection</a> (CW flagstaff) for a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-surprise-jacket">baby surprise jacket</a> (I can't believe I haven't knit one of those up yet).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjghduLUiA6KuCkY4cX_7BZVzRfR-Kk3lc3Khknv8AL4a3EHzE_p_znjtkuBDn5RsBnlZNP5spLW05vghv222qSqwrStOFBe4ekHJ3ZJRqxAd1z6iWPITvwm0JeroDPyxoNTKR8ajtct4mW/s1600/20160905_105826.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjghduLUiA6KuCkY4cX_7BZVzRfR-Kk3lc3Khknv8AL4a3EHzE_p_znjtkuBDn5RsBnlZNP5spLW05vghv222qSqwrStOFBe4ekHJ3ZJRqxAd1z6iWPITvwm0JeroDPyxoNTKR8ajtct4mW/s320/20160905_105826.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then I came across this super cool <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/schoppel-wolle-single-disk-cat-print">Single disk cat print by Schoppel-Wolle</a>! Of course they had a sample sock knit up and it was too cool to pass up so that fell into the bag as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLBVLqJNhLBIncGOU6lgB6Dc3To6RHDIxThBa3gySEjxaZawmgx3FXBpCs7GhQuOdrzNvnsD9Je7KPGnpYIFglgFK3MXUXZCBtYbTIOC3M7EUKsnkCeb8elZHcbOP726aUR75cXsl5iEHE/s1600/20160905_105921.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLBVLqJNhLBIncGOU6lgB6Dc3To6RHDIxThBa3gySEjxaZawmgx3FXBpCs7GhQuOdrzNvnsD9Je7KPGnpYIFglgFK3MXUXZCBtYbTIOC3M7EUKsnkCeb8elZHcbOP726aUR75cXsl5iEHE/s320/20160905_105921.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
On to our next stop, <a href="https://www.fancytigercrafts.com/">Fancy Tiger Crafts</a>. I picked up a couple of Geilsk Tweeds (in moss and copper) that were on clearance (can't pass up on 30% off)!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHQnDk4Fey80Ku_GB4HzB35xfglTf_O06bUbQ3lXvfI5mvUeqfNXfOyvUuf8y2w1FNfnUKrQoSWN1ga_x4wY_D87_1saje38HCtePXhB0-hgzja3AdFE8w7UBn3OhfrPw5dbEihtqD00a/s1600/20160905_111237.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHQnDk4Fey80Ku_GB4HzB35xfglTf_O06bUbQ3lXvfI5mvUeqfNXfOyvUuf8y2w1FNfnUKrQoSWN1ga_x4wY_D87_1saje38HCtePXhB0-hgzja3AdFE8w7UBn3OhfrPw5dbEihtqD00a/s320/20160905_111237.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
After all this yarn crawling we decided we needed some refreshment so we popped across the street to <a href="http://www.sweetactionicecream.com/">Sweet Action Ice Cream</a> and had a scoop of Artisanal ice cream (along with some annoying hipster conversation - e.g., "I haven't been a vegan since I was, like, seven").<br />
<br />
Next it was on to <a href="http://iloveknittingdenver.com/">I Love Knitting</a>. Their pattern was for a lovely <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/MyaLMG/cross-stitch-cowl">cross stitch cowl</a> knit up with one skein of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/malabrigo-yarn-rasta">Rasta</a> by Malabrigo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Fe-Z0UkjjTQcadif0o0Wequq_wsOHo86N0He3ThwEQ9a5NALPokVh0GJIShZz4SuK_9tPruHSnZUKMxBeFBiyFMwlKDBBkukNZgj4mhnxje_FRzCF2wSlq9xyMm7wpdlkUadyMkWnPCm/s1600/20160902_120420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Fe-Z0UkjjTQcadif0o0Wequq_wsOHo86N0He3ThwEQ9a5NALPokVh0GJIShZz4SuK_9tPruHSnZUKMxBeFBiyFMwlKDBBkukNZgj4mhnxje_FRzCF2wSlq9xyMm7wpdlkUadyMkWnPCm/s320/20160902_120420.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
After that we went to <a href="http://www.thelambshoppe.com/">Lambshoppe</a> which was crazy busy so we just were in, got our stamp, and then off to <a href="http://www.fabricblissdenver.com/">Fabric Bliss</a> where I found a lovely little "limited edition" colorway from the <a href="http://www.thelemonadeshopyarns.com/">Lemonade Shop</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZCSqTsvdp9uep5KVH7E9gUSPwUmxqCZEwwXQ9hgy5MMlOglyDOtHNheoekdozt08W82bY0X3SA9GrmbEYFXoZuDmyFAFByFJXmCItxhLTaZizjZzgG0jK5Gsn27Rp3tWgaEkcWKpU0WPi/s1600/20160905_114656.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZCSqTsvdp9uep5KVH7E9gUSPwUmxqCZEwwXQ9hgy5MMlOglyDOtHNheoekdozt08W82bY0X3SA9GrmbEYFXoZuDmyFAFByFJXmCItxhLTaZizjZzgG0jK5Gsn27Rp3tWgaEkcWKpU0WPi/s320/20160905_114656.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
They had a cute little shawl knit up but I forgot to ask what the pattern was so I'm not sure what I will end up making with it.<br />
<br />
After 7 shops we were exhausted! And it was getting late so we decided 7 out of 9 was good and called it a day. I may do more crawling next weekend - I get a little obsessive about getting all the stamps! (and that's why I don't play Pokemon go).<br />
<br />
Guess I better get knitting! <br />
<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">On Saturday, August 6th, I hopped in my car and drove north to Ft. Collins for a day of knitting and fiber goodness at the <a href="http://www.weknitcolorado.com/welcome.html">We Knit Colorado</a> retreat! I wasn't quite sure what to expect since this was their first event and I didn't know the organizer. The venue was <a href="http://www.fcgov.com/recreation/clubtico.php">Club Tico</a>, a very nice community center building and perfect space for the retreat. The vendors had their lovely fiber and accessories set up in one area of the large, open room and tables were set up in a circle for the participants. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here's a picture of all the fun stuff that was in our goodie bag! </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> I knit up the cup cozy really quickly with the fun mini-skein and there was a pattern for the blue yarn </span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">There were prize drawings during the day and at the end I won a lovely Alpaca headband from <a href="http://www.paxknits.com/">Pax Knits</a>: </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I took the </span><span style="font-family: georgia,serif; line-height: 24px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Houndstooth Double Knit Cowl with Melanie (<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/knitstitchyarn">Knit Stitch Yarn</a>). There were a lot of stitches to cast on so that took up the majority of the class time. I'm still pretty slow at it but I think it will be great when I'm done. This pattern will be another great Christmas gift knit to add to my repertoire.</span> </span></span><br />

While we didn't attend the first year we have been there every year since and this year things were certainly bigger! The exhibit hall was expanded with more vendors and more food (although convention center food always leaves something to be desired) and more room for attendees to walk around in the autograph area. <br />
<br />
Even though there was a good deal of waiting around I didn't get as much knitting done as I would like. I had just started <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/that-nice-stitch">That Nice Stitch</a> cowl with some lovely Purple Velvet <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/wollmeise-blend">Wollmeise Blend</a> so I brought that along. Although it's not a complicated pattern there is a little keeping track of which row so I wasn't able to plow along as quickly as I had hoped.<br />
<br />
At least there was time for this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwpkPiJmGWnkUz-78XYS-wCwCJqbTIF8k4Kf8UQmUCTQONpC8zQHcyx7V22g86Z5iH75vNVNJdvgBosRmfG7LshrHcM24dj4_90_2EwXVhdY7Plw-x3uuPM2Fs6CFpr0PMMFDudbqRpLMf/s1600/Game+of+knitting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwpkPiJmGWnkUz-78XYS-wCwCJqbTIF8k4Kf8UQmUCTQONpC8zQHcyx7V22g86Z5iH75vNVNJdvgBosRmfG7LshrHcM24dj4_90_2EwXVhdY7Plw-x3uuPM2Fs6CFpr0PMMFDudbqRpLMf/s320/Game+of+knitting.jpg" width="192" /></a></div>
Some day I will come up with a good Comic Con cosplay but for now I'm happy to just sit on the throne with my knitting. <br /><br />Myahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03598463854277972244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4412157059134816064.post-72488610490822476962014-10-11T12:53:00.001-06:002014-10-11T12:53:52.068-06:00I'm a winner! 1. 22 skeins of Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 Sport and the pattern for<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/azure-wood"> Azure Woods Cardigan</a>. I'm not sure if I'll ever make this (although it would be good to learn steeking) but I'm sure I can find a way to use this yarn.<br />

The cats both love it as you can see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYFYlG51hy_ubD0O4FDlddpLIIPpo3kz19xrLSlm758WcWrSusoG4rvDEJCcakEW9c9QoosNNZUtTWzWCA1YljI-2r7oL7EJmyM4SrjgcZGL9tWcOeVVdMFjLLAAZCm7QwoU1N6m2XSLYZ/s1600/Mr+simba+on+tree+skirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYFYlG51hy_ubD0O4FDlddpLIIPpo3kz19xrLSlm758WcWrSusoG4rvDEJCcakEW9c9QoosNNZUtTWzWCA1YljI-2r7oL7EJmyM4SrjgcZGL9tWcOeVVdMFjLLAAZCm7QwoU1N6m2XSLYZ/s320/Mr+simba+on+tree+skirt.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV_N6_ARZyX5MO-Wy-fwexLy63cti68F6Qrhlrxq1mpgPGgdV7a-ogUPgJ3jRXEyaHq4oP0iMc0VR4n8fVaOhSaDw6Qitc5Dbpa7y7xGMZQhxHyeH0Xr_tZfvBu_xITy0CMl18vQl6qIl3/s1600/Rtu+on+tree+skirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV_N6_ARZyX5MO-Wy-fwexLy63cti68F6Qrhlrxq1mpgPGgdV7a-ogUPgJ3jRXEyaHq4oP0iMc0VR4n8fVaOhSaDw6Qitc5Dbpa7y7xGMZQhxHyeH0Xr_tZfvBu_xITy0CMl18vQl6qIl3/s320/Rtu+on+tree+skirt.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
But the real question is who shall be the ultimate recipient of the tree skirt? My first thought was I would give it to a friend of mine as a wedding gift (he was married in September). I thought it would be nice for their first Christmas together. But then I started thinking, what if they don't like it? And then I give it to them and they act all polite and nice and then shove it in a box somewhere. Or worse, they throw it out or donate it. The yarn for this bad boy was not inexpensive and the amount of time I'm spending on it is not inconsequential. I thought about asking them if they liked it but then would they say yes just to be nice? Should I try to find someone who already likes it (I have a couple of people who have appropriately fawned over it and expressed interest in owning it). Or should I just keep it for myself or, rather, my cats, who seem to have claimed it already. <br />
<br />

While I love winter and the snow I'm always happy for the return of green things and warmer days. Of course Colorado can be temperamental with the weather and I hear there is snow in the forecast for the weekend but I'm going to ignore that right now. <br />
<br />
Currently I am working on Anne Hanson's Longshadows scarf. This was a pattern from her <a href="http://www.knitspot.com/clubs/fallen_leaves/index.php">Fall in Full Color 2011 club</a>. I am actually doing two at a time so it's a little slow going. It's not a terribly complicated pattern but I do have to pay attention. It's Anne Hanson lace after all. I decided to set it out on the counter so every time I pass it I can bang out a row or two. Gonna get these finished!<br />
<br />
Also on the needles is the latest in Woolgirl's <a href="http://www.woolgirl.com/uploads/Announcement_-_Poets_Club.pdf">Poet's club,</a> Root and Bud hat. I finished the cowl and loved the yarn so much I ordered more so I could do the hat. It is going pretty quick.<br />
<br />
And tonight at knit night I will probably work on stitching up the elephant.<br />
<br />
What are you working on? <br />

This year marks year 7. How many kits have I knit up, you ask? With 6 kits per year that's 36 kits I have so far. And I have knit up a grand total of 1 pair. Seriously. One pair out of 36. This seems, well, just wrong. So in 2013 I plan to remedy that by starting off knitting each pair as I get them and then working on previous years in the off months. <br />
<br />
This month's kit has a pattern called Roadside Attraction and I simply love it. In fact since we get the PDFs before we get the yarn now I decided to start it in some other stash yarn I had been trying to knit up for the last several months but couldn't seem to find the right pattern. This one was perfect.<br />
<br />
Don't you agree?<br />
<br />
And I think after these are finished up I will do another pair in the club color. I found it a very engaging read - he has quite the knack for writing narrative that gives you the distinct feeling you are in that person's head, seeing things as that person sees them. I ordered a couple other books from the trusty Paperback book swap website and put them into the "to read" pile. (if you wonder how big my "to read pile is I suggest you take a look at <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bciFu-gavHU&feature=plcp&context=C4be050aVDvjVQa1PpcFMxaKNawmcxzfkpTCorQO3R9nyE5_KUXJ0=">this amusing video</a> my husband made). I saw in an email from the <a href="http://arapahoelibraries.org/ald/">local library</a> that Mr. Boyle (or I guess it's really Dr. Boyle since he does have a PhD in Nineteenth Century British Literature from the University of Iowa) was coming to Denver for a discussion and book signing so I signed up. Listening to authors talk about their work is often inspiring to me even though I doubt I'll ever write the great American novel. <br />
<br />
I wasn't sure what to expect - I didn't really know that much about him or his work (aside from the fact he was a New York Times Best selling author). Sunday morning I started wondering if I should even go. There was a The Walking Dead marathon on AMC (since the season 2 finale is tonight) and I get kind of lazy by Sunday afternoon. When I told Josh I wasn't sure I should go he pulled out a quote from the Simpsons (is there ANYTHING in life that show doesn't have a quote for?) Josh said I would be sorry if I didn't got just like when Homer was sorry he didn't go earlier to meeting Mr. T<br />
<br />
From the episode Deep Space Homer:<br />
Marge: But on the other hand, when you don't take advantage of an<br />
opportunity, you can end up regretting it for the rest of your<br />
life.<br />
Homer: You're right, Marge. Just like the time I could have met Mr. T<br />
at the mall. The entire day I kept saying, "I'll go a little<br />
later. I'll go a little later." And then when I got there, they<br />
told me he'd just left. And when I asked the mall guy if he<br />
would ever come back again, he said he didn't know. Well, I'm<br />
never going to let something like that happen again! I'm going<br />
into space right now!<br />
<br />
Well, I didn't go into space but I did go listen to the talk and I was so glad Josh convinced me to go! Mr. Boyle was delightful! (shhhhhh, don't tell Josh he was right). <br />
<br />
First he thanked us for coming out on a cold rainy Sunday (it was actually a very warm and sunny, albeit windy, day). He then told us he had discovered our purpose in life while in the men's room - it was to be the receivers of advertisements. Apparently there was a television in the mirror in the men's room that blasted ads while you washed your hands. <br />
<br />
He chatted briefly about his new book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/When-Killings-Done-A-Novel/dp/0143120395/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332117368&sr=8-1">When the Killing's Done </a> and how it was inspired by the history of what has happened with the wildlife on Channel Islands off the coast of California. Sounds like a very interesting book (and yes, I bought a copy and had him sign it). <br />
<br />
He then read us one of his short stories, The Lie, which tells the story of what happens when a disillusioned 26-year-old calls in to get out of work with a lie. As he was reading it I could really imagine this guy telling this lie, skipping work,and then dealing with the ramifications of his story. Some authors are great writers but not great readers. Mr. Boyle was the exception. He was a fantastic reader and made the story come alive!<br />
<br />
I did some searching when I got home and found out this was expanded <a href="http://www.theliemovie.com/">into a movie</a> last year. Not sure if it was ever in theaters but it is on demand on Netflix so I may have to check it out. <br />
<br />
After he was done he took some audience questions which were less than interesting, finished up the talk and went out to sign books. I had brought <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Friend-Earth-T-C-Boyle/dp/0141002050">A Friend of the Earth</a> and had him sign that as well. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjbFSGY4Gd3tl4NaGHQOenBa9M-LaQqiideSE8Nb5heiiHroNDilJfP4R545J2-L-VA7a76e2KeT0ej1EtTLou1qBA4_Wk_3exHwLSbJOtSxqgUb1MQ6_SHWIAmToYV56nOQC5qglBbBMX/s1600/T.C.+Boyle+sigs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear:left; float:left;margin-right:1em; margin-bottom:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjbFSGY4Gd3tl4NaGHQOenBa9M-LaQqiideSE8Nb5heiiHroNDilJfP4R545J2-L-VA7a76e2KeT0ej1EtTLou1qBA4_Wk_3exHwLSbJOtSxqgUb1MQ6_SHWIAmToYV56nOQC5qglBbBMX/s320/T.C.+Boyle+sigs.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Unfortunately I thought I had taken a picture of him during the talk but my camera on my phone decided not to save it so I'll post a picture <a href="http://boswellandbooks.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html">from another blog</a> that describes his talk as he was wearing pretty much the exact same outfit (from Boswellandbooks.bogspot.com). <br />

(since 2001 but who's counting) And every Christmas I would get all crazy town trying to finish up socks and scarves and sweaters and blankets and fall miserably behind and either have to rush out to the stores for last minute gifts to replace the unfinished knitting or wrap an unfinished object and take it back after they unwrapped it to work on it until January or February or.... But this year I have found the answer. Hats! I have cranked out 3 of these bad boys and it's only December 2nd! (below are Ravelry links to the patterns, sorry if you're not on Ravelry - you should be!)<br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fish-hat-dead-or-alive">Fish Hat</a> done in Nemo colors. It still needs eyes so I have to figure out how I'm going to do that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkVR-ruT-sdoXE8SKb9kQX5xQrqQwTL-LS2ojL3NgYtlVbtAhqOYJz10JB-24xe2BxihEZAQ00bLIdEurEWF4iVUq3JGIh-NExgvL70l2XE1FJNd5f8z8HzK3_rFfilgi6L3XQ06fOmYR8/s1600/Olivers+Xmas+hat+2011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear:left; float:left;margin-right:1em; margin-bottom:1em"><img border="0" height="288" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkVR-ruT-sdoXE8SKb9kQX5xQrqQwTL-LS2ojL3NgYtlVbtAhqOYJz10JB-24xe2BxihEZAQ00bLIdEurEWF4iVUq3JGIh-NExgvL70l2XE1FJNd5f8z8HzK3_rFfilgi6L3XQ06fOmYR8/s320/Olivers+Xmas+hat+2011.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
2. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/anemone-hats">Anemone hat</a> by the fabulous <a href="http://catbordhi.com/">Cat Bordhi</a> (this was was so freaking quick I am tempted to make more) <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3. The lovely <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-hat">baby hat</a> from the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Skein-Leigh-Radford/dp/1931499748/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322844976&sr=8-1">One Skein</a> book. It was awesome and quick and looks super cute. <br />
<br />
I'll be posting pictures of the actual recipients wearing MY knitted version after Christmas. <br />
<br />
The other really exciting thing is I have been able to use stash yarn for these hats! Double bonus! <br />
<br />
Just cast on the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/swirled-ski-cap">Swirled Ski Cap</a> which is going super fast as well. Probably will finish it up this weekend. <br />
<br />
And today I see my pal Carrie, aka <a href="http://www.wedonothaveaknittingproblem.blogspot.com/">Irish Girlie Knits</a> has her awesome Snowboarder Hat pattern on sale for only $3! Guess what I'm casting on next?Myahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03598463854277972244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4412157059134816064.post-88350304386692274032011-10-06T09:20:00.002-06:002011-10-06T09:20:52.167-06:00Our CruiseThis was our first cruise and while I know a lot of people like cruises (there were tons of people there who said this was their 6th or 7th cruise) we have decided we aren't really "cruise people". (we are more "Disney parks people") That being said we had a nice time and here's the video montage of our cruise: <br />

I've got U2 tickets and we are leaving for Hawaiian vacation tomorrow. But if it does I've got the mix tape ready. <br />

So I'm thinking road trip implies driving. I don't take a lot of long road trips, I usually fly. But there is usually at least one annual trip on I-70 from Denver to Topeka (8 glorious hours provided weather is cooperating). <br />
<a href="http://twitpic.com/3fo6ot" title="Just entered Colorado! have finished dad&#039;s socks &amp; n... on Twitpic"><img src="http://twitpic.com/show/thumb/3fo6ot.jpg" width="150" height="150" alt="Just entered Colorado! have finished dad&#039;s socks &amp; n... on Twitpic"></a><br />
<br />
1. Knitting. Assuming I'm not the one driving<br />
2. CDs. I know, I'm antiquated but I don't have a way to play the iPod in the car. Sometimes I even make a mix CD! <br />
3. Bottles of soda (usually <a href="www.drpepper.com">Diet Dr. Pepper</a>) and water. Must stay hydrated. <br />
4. Book on CD. If I'm driving by myself this is a must have. However, I learned it's not a good idea to listen to anything by <a href="www.stephenking.com/">Stephen King</a> while driving alone at night across Kansas.<br />
5. Sunflower seeds. <br />
<br />
Of course this is what I usually do on road trips (again, assuming I'm not driving)<br />

The computer is the biggest time suck next to the television. That being said here are my favorite websites/blogs (in no particular order). <br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com">Ravelry</a><br />

8. <a href="http://www.grooveshark.com">Grooveshark</a> (an excellent place to find songs to listen to when you're away from your iTunes)<br />

<br />
10. <a href="http://www.bluemoonfiberarts.com/newmoon/">Blue Moon Fiber Arts</a> (love this yarn so much!)Myahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03598463854277972244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4412157059134816064.post-3423158895426085602011-03-08T18:35:00.002-07:002011-03-09T10:20:25.845-07:00List 8: In My BagFirst of all I have to wonder which bag. My purse? My knitting bag? My work bag?<br />
And then this song keeps going through my head: <br />
<object height="400" width="250"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/widget.swf" /><param name="wmode" value="window" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&songIDs=21872810&style=metal&p=0" /><embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/widget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="400" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&songIDs=21872810&style=metal&p=0" allowScriptAccess="always" wmode="window" /> </object><br />
<br />
I guess I can list what's in my purse since that's what I usually have with me at all times. <br />
1. Purple wallet with typical wallet stuff (credit cards, money, ID, receipts)<br />
<br />
2. Purple LG Optimus cell phone (love my droid!) in a cute knitted case I made at Sock Camp<br />
<br />
3. Miscellaneous pens and pencils <br />
<br />
4. Key ring with all those "frequent shopper" tabs (Petsmart, Borders, Library card, etc.)<br />
<br />
5. Sunglasses<br />
<br />
6. A couple of bottles of lotion and multiple tubes of chapstick (hey, I live in Colorado land of zero humidity)<br />
<br />
7. Several pads of paper (you never know when you're going to have an idea you need to jot down)<br />
<br />
8. My Dell Axim (I know this is kind of antiquated but I still use it like crazy. Maybe someday I'll migrate contacts and calendar over to the droid)<br />
<br />
9. Tums, vitamin C packs, cough drops, ibuprofen (standard medical necessities)<br />
<br />

Okay, here goes: <br /><br />1. Post 3 days per week (one posting can be a "wordless" post)<br /><br />2. Come up with a fun contest for my Blogversary (March 25 will be 3 years)<br /><br />3. Keep up with the rest of the 30 days of lists (which will allow me to exceed my goal of posting 3 days per week)<br /><br />4. Write the "about me" page<br /><br />5. Decide if I want to create alternate blogs for other topics or if I want to keep this one as a potpourri of topics.Myahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03598463854277972244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4412157059134816064.post-57027533936713196872011-03-05T07:55:00.003-07:002011-03-05T07:58:52.653-07:00I found it!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg3HK2XW78mXM9K81kiAeyx2w2NcKEcHjUcWnlitW1eRmf5P7IxzQjATI4oQO7Mt1mSRUKWBOHmIortF4U-pu_vTK33B7iF15lg5mT7h9SPLsf7EXxLo6vbFCGtxeeq6HeEGanpt_tjtbZ/s1600/airplane+watch.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg3HK2XW78mXM9K81kiAeyx2w2NcKEcHjUcWnlitW1eRmf5P7IxzQjATI4oQO7Mt1mSRUKWBOHmIortF4U-pu_vTK33B7iF15lg5mT7h9SPLsf7EXxLo6vbFCGtxeeq6HeEGanpt_tjtbZ/s320/airplane+watch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580610399550017634" /></a><br />Just a quick update to post a picture of my watch that I bought on that fabulous shopping trip when I was 16. It always reminds me of the time when I was around 16 years old or so and I went on a trip with one of my friends and her parents to Illinois. I think they were going for some kind of craft show (?) but WE were going for the MALL! There was a mall there with 2 floors of shopping goodness. In Topeka our meager mall only had one level so this was a crazy treat for a couple of teenage power shoppers! We listened to this song about a million times in the car. <br /><br />I remember buying an awesome pair of silver shoes on the first day. Upon wearing them the second day of shopping they chewed up my ankles so bad I was hobbling around looking for band-aids. But did I change shoes? Nope. Pain is small price to pay for fashion. I also bought a pink watch that had a bubble face with a little airplane that went round and round for the second hand. It kind of looks like the yellow one in this picture.
